I’m taking a little break from the practice journal right now. I need to focus on my upcoming NEC application deadline.
Since I last wrote, I had a good sit-down with Tim Miller. We came to the conclusion that I was barking up the wrong tree with some of the music that I was looking at. I have a deep appreciation and affection for jazz, but truthfully it’s not the music that moves me. The tricky part is that I like Jazz harmony & improvisation, but just not from a traditional sense. Tim suggested I start looking into artists that are already doing that: Bela Fleck, Pat Metheny, and Wolfgang Muthspiel. It was a good lesson and it helped realize how I was forcing myself to work on music that didn’t inspire me very much. I’ve been working on a lot Muthspiel lately. He’s a great musician and a clever improviser. I have a lot to learn from him.
